"Ya know, you're probably right, brotha'." Desmond grinned. It was nice talking to someone who could relate to where he was coming from. It seemed as if Desmond and Charlie had nearly forgotten about the visions, but it still lingered in the back of Desmond's mind. He stared into the blazing fire in front of him. He lost focus as he stared into it, but snapped out of his hypnotized state. Looking up, he saw Jin, the Korean man married to Sun, bringing in a load of fish for everyone. What would they do without him? "Looks like Jin's brought in dinner again. I don't know 'bout you, but I'm getting hungry," Desmond said. There was a crowd standing next to Jin, all trying to get their servings. "Then again, I don't really have the patience to stand in line." He laughed a bit, and continued his conversation with Charlie.
"The only reason I asked for Widmore's hand in marriage was because he was a very powerful man. Penny always seemed to be resistant against him, but I knew -- thought, that it was the right thing to do. It was foolish for me to believe what he said, but if you'd have seen the look on his face, and the tone of his voice. His words pierced me; it felt as if I'd been struck by lightning. And there was nothing I could do. So I got scared. I fled, and that's how I ended up on this bloody island." Desmond realized he didn't feel as hurt and discouraged as before when he said this.
With that, he continued. "And you know what the worst part of being on this island is?" He paused, and then went on. "I don't even know if Penny is still out there, looking for me. If she hasn't given up hope..." He felt a little worse when he mentioned this, but he got himself together again. Charlie was very easy to talk to. He wasn't like some of the other castaways who were fed up in themselves and ignored anything you told them. Desmond grabbed a stick off the ground and began scribbling in the sand, drawing lines and such that when connected, had no purpose. Desmond had realized why it was easy to talk to Charlie. He gave him hope...
