"That's great" Desmond expelled, clasping his head with both hands in a confused manner. "That's really bloody great!" his left hand left his head to point where Kate and Jack had just been before they plundered into the green plush. "Now, can anyone tell me what the hell is going on here?" He looked to Richard, guessing this guy must be in the know in some capacity. The finger he was pointing jerked in the man's direction, "You better have some answers, brotha, I'd like for us to play nicely. But if you don't start talking pretty bloody fast..."
Desmond knew it was unlikely Richard was going to answer any questions he had, even if he did have them, Des would be hard pressed to actually work them out of the Other. He leaned against the trunk of the nearest tree, and ran a hand through his still-clean hair and then over his clean shaven face - which he'd shaved only last morning in the bathroom mirror; the reflection of Penny lying in bed watching him as prominent in his mind as the jungle was now. He bit his lip, hard, to stop it from trembling too noticeably.

She had been following along silently, trying not to be too noticeable. She was sure Sawyer and Jack had already forgotten she was there - besides, she was used to travelling in silence by now.
They emerged into the clearing with the Black Rock, and her eyes darted to the ship, remembering coming there as a child. She hadn't been there in years. As the others began talking, she carefully stepped over to it, running her fingers gently over the aged, rotting wood and wondering how long it would take her to pull herself up onto the deck. Of course, she wouldn't have a chance with Richard standing there, but she could try.
But her thoughts were scratched as Kate suddenly bolted off into the jungle, Jack right after her. She frowned, but focused her attention back on the group, setting aside her thoughts for adventure for later. "What's her problem?" She asked no one in particular, jerking her head in Kate's direction, glancing around at the group.
"I don't think we've met before. I'm Alex - Ben's unofficial daughter." She said to Daniel and Desmond with a slight smile, nodding in their direction. She leaned back against the wood of the ship, wincing slightly as it creaked. Testing it for a moment, she put her full weight on it, only to have the piece of hull break, cracking into pieces and falling to the floor with a loud noise. She winced again, momentarily having forgotten that there was dynamite in there.
"Ooops. Sorry."

(Left Behind. Again. Joy. ) It seemed the trek was better left silent, at least between her and Jack. It gave her time to contemplate just exactly what it was, or could be, that was eating at him, and why he wouldn't just tell her. Although she supposed that their relationship wasn't exactly built on the sturdiest of trust, as she still had her doubts. As much as she loved him, felt attached to him, she often imagined him wishing things had gone differently. It was no secret he had had feelings for Kate, possibly still did, how could she expect his feelings to vanish simply because he also had feelings for her? She couldn't, it wasn't some dramatic truth, it was just truth. She knew that. Yet at the same time, she felt something twisting in her gut, a sort of jealousy and sickness at the idea. What if Kate were here? What would that mean? She had never been more than a stumbling block and a hindrance for Jack's sanity back in L.A. Her death had spiraled him out of control. Juliet had been there for him, she had taken care of him, all the while knowing she was probably not the one he originally wanted. She had long since accepted that spiteful twist of fate in her life, she had gotten over it too. But now, she felt he was hers. She had kept him alive, shared her heart, and her body. She had loved him. Then again, nothing good can ever last forever. The voices that seemed to ring out from ahead were all the evidence she needed to validate that statement. It sort of seemed a blur, several voices and faces joined the fray, but it wasn't until she saw James stop dead in his tracks, and feel Jack's pulse quicken from where their hands were joined, that she knew. Kate. Standing in an awkward Silence, Juliet kept a soft gaze fixed on the other woman, slowly turning it onto Jack, who's emotions played out stronger on her than her own. When Kate ran away, Juliet nodded to Jack, releasing his hand. She could see that he wanted to go after her, she could see he needed to. "Go," she spoke softly, putting on a light smile, "I'll be here, I promise." Smirking lightly, she hoped it helped to reassure him, and found the humor made the other emotions easier to ignore. Shifting her stance awkwardly, she gave light smiles to everyone around her, gaze drifting over to Sawyer, wondering what he must be feeling. She had seen him and Kate in the cages, she knew that there was something there, and although she didn't know the depth of it, the look on his face was telling enough. "Sucks, doesn't it?" Juliet said jokingly, looking over at him, nodding in the general direction they ran off to, "being left behind." She smirked dryly at him, but a light sadness remained behind her eyes. "We should probably get moving," surely if anyone could appreciate her ulterior motives, he could. "Don't want them to get lost." Her smirk returned, only slightly more genuine now.

All the sounds of the jungle around him seemed to fade away, and when she mouthed his name he swore he could hear it carried over the wind. In slow motion he saw her stumble backwards, her head moving from side to side. He tried to take a step toward her, but his feet felt leaden. He tried to call out to her when she turned away, but his voice caught in his throat. In the blink of an eye she was gone, the jungle quickly swallowing her whole.
He wanted to go after her, to wrap his arms around her, to inhale that scent that was undeniably Kate, but before his body could respond to this desire Jack was already racing into the trees behind her. It hadn’t taken the doctor long to fall right back into hero mode.
Lowering his eyes, long dishevelled hair falling over them, Sawyer clenched his jaw and glared at the ground. She was here, they were all here. Glancing over at Juliet when she spoke, his look was harsh for a moment due to her joking tone, but it faded quickly as he recognised a certain sadness in her eyes that he was sure was reflected in his own. It was strange how the one person he never trusted and could never figure out was now the one who had the best chance of understanding him. Nodding almost imperceptivity at Juliet, he finally got his feet to obey and took a few steps up to stand beside Richard.
“Now simmer down there, Rob Roy. We all got questions, but we ain’t got tha time. So how about we get this party on the way, and once we rounded everyone all up we can all sit around a cozy fire and tell ghost stories,” Sawyer replied to Desmond.

"Kate?!"
The word came out more as a confused question than a declaration of her name. Kate spun on her heels and turned toward the voice, but even before she did, Kate was certain who the voice belonged to. She knew that tenor, that husky male voice as well as she knew her own. Perhaps even better.
Still, the surprise she felt upon seeing Jack was as much a comfort as it was a further confusion. How was it the island pulled him here like it had her? Why did it feel the need to remove them from their lives, their horrible, nightmarish lives in LA, stripping them of any chance for more regret and heart breaking pain of watching yet another one of their friends die? Was the island so benevolent that it desired to relieve them all of their pain? Kate doubted it could be so and yet there really was no better explanation.
"Hey! H-Hey, it's--it's okay--"
Wiping the tears from her face, Kate almost had to laugh. Maybe the jungle did know her and understand her needs. Maybe, just maybe this island was indeed their savior. It definitely seemed to be hers. After all, she had wanted Jack to come tell her those exact words, and now, here he stood, being the ever comforting voice of reason and a sturdy force for her to lean upon. It was just like it always was. Jack was here to save the day.
Kate took a tentative step toward Jack. First one, then another before she broke into something of a jog to close the distance between them. Kate wrapped her arms around Jack without even thinking it through, just needing to feel the reality and warmth of someone real. This entire scene was much too surreal for her tastes, something more out of a fantasy than anything real ever could be.
The relief within her rose as the truth of Jack's presence was felt. She lay her head at his shoulder, against his chest, and closed her eyes, reveling in the feel of him. Jack was here. This was real. She could breathe again.
Without looking up or pulling away, Kate could tell Jack was as effected by the events as she was. His small trembles could be felt as she hugged him tightly, and Kate felt more strongly that she shouldn't release him just yet. It seemed to her that both of them were having a lot of the same feelings, though she wondered if he was seeing dead people as well.
Shaking her head gently against him, Kate sighed. "I don't understand what's going on. One minute I'm in LA, the next I'm here," she confessed.
Kate pulled away far enough to look into Jack's eyes, noticing for the first time the tears in them. She gave a weak smile, pressed her lips together and looked away feeling a little awkward. She wasn't sure why Jack was crying, but she had a clue he was happy to see her. This brought a few conflicting feelings into Kate's heart, making her stomach flutter slightly, but she quickly regained control as she thought of why she had run into the jungle in the first place.
"I thought I saw Sawyer... back by the Black Rock," Kate admitted solemnly. She looked back at Jack. "First I'm back on the island, now I'm seeing dead people... I think I'm going crazy."

"I don't understand what's going on. One minute I'm in LA, the next, I'm here."
Her words broke him out of the surprise his mind was rushing through as she had slid her arms around his torso. One thing he always noticed, was she was small. So much smaller than him. Her hands were tiny in his, her head only reached to about his neck, if that. He could feel the vibration of her voice against his chest, and he wrapped his arms around her tightly as he felt his eyes close. For the longest time, he failed to answer her. She was here. Alive. Warm, not cold like she had been in the morgue. A hand slipped down her back, feeling each bump of her spine through her shirt, and the other slid up to her hair, pressing against the curls as he leaned his cheek against the top of her head, and closed his eyes.
His stomach did a flip flop as he realised how close she was, but just as he realised it, she pulled back slightly to look at him, and he opened his eyes, blinking as she spoke, as if realising for the first time that she possessed a voice and the ability to speak. That she wasn't just a dream.
"I thought I saw Sawyer. Back by the Black Rock. First I'm back on the Island, now I'm seeing dead people. I think I'm going crazy."
Jack knew it was either the truth, or the understatement of the century, because with the sight of both Kate and Juliet, Jack figured he'd go crazy for simple emotional overload than anything. It was his turn to find his own voice, and he brought a hand up to her cheek, shaking his head lightly. "No. No, you're--you're not crazy. Something...something happened. I don't--" It was hard to even explain it himself; to actually think about it, process it and believe that what he was saying was true. That he had died...and yet, he was here.
"Maybe we're all dead."
No, no, that wasn't the right thing to say. He couldn't say that to her, but as the words came out of his mouth, he shook his head to try to explain them. "I don't---Sawyer's there. Sawyer, the Baby, Juliet, Charlotte, Daniel--everyone we saw die in Los Angeles...they're here." The thought of dying again, of her or Juliet or anyone dying again, and he brought his fingers up to her lips, feeling the warm breath coming from them. The words that escaped his lips were something of surprise, although there was a tint of confusion in them.
"You're really here."
He wrapped his arms around her once more, cherishing the warmth, even stealing it for his own so he could hold onto it always when it got cold. He realised then that Juliet had the same warmth, and his stomach shifted again, flip flopping in a confusing and always painful way.
"Richard says there's more people out there, that we have to find them and then go back to the beach. The rest of them. Charlotte's on the beach with the baby." A breath escaped his lips as he felt his eyes close again. "I thought--I almost thought it was over for a second...I thought...I thought all of it was going to be done and then...we wake up here."

As the wood creaked and groaned from Alex leaning on the Black Rock, Richard's head turned to look at the young girl, motioning with a quick flick of his wrist for her to come to his side once again and away from the possibly explosive ship. Desmond's words broke his gaze from Alex, and he turned his head to look at the Scot.
"You'll what? Fight me? Kill me?" Richard asked evenly. "Both, I'd like to see you try. So go ahead." Richard said, extending his hands slightly. "No? I thought so. I have more answers, but you don't need to know all of them at the moment. Just know that Penny's safe, and you're here, where you can't get her hurt anymore. That's enough for now."
Looking at Sawyer and Juliet once more, Richard felt a sigh escape his lips as he looked more at Juliet and spoke to her. "I don't know how you can stand these people."

Desmond lifted his weight from the tree he was leaning again and took a cautioned step toward Richard, his finger pointing at the man's chest, "Don't tempt me, brotha." he said with menace and jabbed the finger further to emphasis his point, "Do not tempt me." His top lip had curled into a snarl, but he knew it, particularly Richard, wasn't worth his efforts. It wasn't an empty threat by any means, however.
So it seemed like he was in this island until further notice. He pushed the pain back as far as it would go, at least enough for it not to show to anybody else. Desmond was sure those who at least had family were feeling the burn anyway. Desmond folded his arms over his chest and took a few deep breaths to calm himself. As soon as he got to the beach, he could set off for answers; he worked better alone anyway.
He nodded toward Sawyer, "Aye, I reckon we've nothing to lose." He gestured toward Richard, "I'll even cope with having to walk alongside that son of a bitch." he smirked and winked at the man in question.

"Don't tempt me, brotha. Do not tempt me."
Looking at Desmond's finger as he thrust it in Richard's face, Richard tilted his head slightly before he felt a smirk cross his lips as he watched the man step back, arms crossed over his chest. Stepping to him, Richard leaned in slightly at Desmond's shoulder, his voice low and serious. "I think what you're forgetting, Desmond, is that I can make things you love go away quicker than you can blink. I've killed more important men than you without even thinking. I think what you should have said, was that you shouldn't tempt me."
Pulling away from Desmond, Richard looked to Sawyer. "Right. So, since your leader decided to run off into the jungle, I guess that makes you the de facto leader for the moment. We need to find them quickly and get back to the beach. Nightfall's going to be coming."
With that, he started walking, glancing behind him to see if Alex was in tow.

The way Jack wrapped his arms around Kate did little to aid in her confusion. He was holding her so tightly, as if he hadn't seen her in so long, it was a little disconcerting and yet... it was also pretty wonderful. Kate held onto Jack as his hand wrapped in her hair and roamed over her back, snugging her against his chest, only moving to question him when she felt a great need to know she wasn't going insane.
"Maybe we're all dead," he replied. That idea didn't make Kate feel any better. She looked at him with an odd look in her eye, one of question and curiosity. Kate didn't think they could be dead when they all felt so alive. Or at least Jack felt very much alive in her arms. Kate almost moved to hold Jack tightly again but instead paused when Jack said Sawyer was here. He was alive.
"What?" Kate asked, exasperated. "He can't be..."
Her shock was mirrored almost completely in Jack's gaze with the exception of the deep care she saw there also. Jack was confused as she, but he also looked at Kate with so much affection it nearly broke her concentration over their situation, then did render he speechless for a moment when he engulfed her closely and spoke softly, "You're really here."
Why did he say that and look at her as if she were an apparition? Kate could only guess. Perhaps when she thought she was sleeping the sleep of the dead and found peace in what she thought was Heaven, she really was? It seemed very far fetched to think of as a possibility and yet Jack confirmed Sawyer was here as well. Kate held tighter to Jack at that moment, wishing these strange happenings were all just a strange dream and they could wake up in LA.
Then again, Kate didn't want to. Her conflicting emotions ever more in the forefront as she considered she didn't want to lose this moment. Jack was holding her like she had so often dreamed and wished he would, and yet feared. And Sawyer, he was alive here! Would Kate ever trade that for the world? The more she was held in silence in Jack's arms the more Kate realized she wouldn't. She had Jack here, and Sawyer. While that made her heart torn and conflicted, bringing back the familiar complications of her feelings, Kate was actually glad.
Biting her lip as Jack spoke, but not interrupting their embrace, Kate listened as Jack explained, a deep sigh emitting from his lips. Kate nodded that she heard and her mind wondered more again as she recounted the deaths of some of those he mentioned, including Aaron. It was surreal, but that seemed to be the order of her new reality and considering their current location, it really didn't surprise her as much as it should have.
"I know it doesn't make any sense," Kate admitted finally after a long silence, quite sincerely in a husky whisper. "But I'm glad you're here." Rubbing her face against Jack's chest on the front of his shirt, Kate made her face free of any tears that might have snuck past her resolve. She would not permit herself to falter now, but increased her determination. Kate knew she needed to be strong again, just like the last time they were here. Pulling her face back slightly, making the proximity of her face to Jack's a little closer than might normally have been comfortable, Kate looked up at him with open curiosity and bestowed on him the leadership he had always had on the island.
"So what do you think? Do you think we should go to the beach?""

Alex moved to stand beside Richard, away from the ship. She watched Desmond threaten Richard, shaking her head slightly. There was no way the Scottish man could win in a fight against Richard, little own have a chance at even killing him. If Desmond even tried Alex would have pulled the gun out of her waistband so fast that he wouldn't have time to think.
Alex began to follow Richard back into the trees, just after Desmond as he mentioned going to get the others. There was only a few left now, she figured. "You better come on." She said to Juliet and Sawyer. "He's right about dark. And we don't want to be stuck out here in case Ol' Smokey decides to show up."

There was a silence that fell as Jack wrapped his arms around Kate. He felt her head against his chest, and he was sure that she could feel his heart slowly start to go back to a normal beat, although, every time her head moved, every time he felt her take in a breath, his heart skipped a beat.
It couldn't have been healthy, but what was anymore?
"What? He can't be..."
"I don't know how it happened. In that same token, you--you shouldn't be here, Juliet shouldn't--" He cut himself off, shaking his head as he pressed his lips down to the top of her head. He couldn't think that way. Juliet's words echoed in his mind; he couldn't think about that. It was over and done with and...and they were here. Alive.
"I know it doesn't make any sense, but I'm glad you're here."
Her face pulled away from his chest, and looking down at her, his face was close to his and it made his heart thump loudly in his chest. "Me too." Of course he was glad she was alive; he had told her he loved her on the Island, and he knew he always would, but...there was that little tear in his emotions, in his heart. How could two women haunt him as much as they did?
He brought a hand up, pressing it against her cheek as his thumb rubbed across the freckles that he found there. She spoke, and it took a moment for Jack to register what she was saying.
"Uh, yeah. Yeah, Richard said that they were heading back to the beach when...when they found the rest." Jack felt himself nod, and his hand dropped from her cheek. "We get back on the beach and...and then..." And then, what? Jack hadn't a clue. "Well, I guess we figure out why we're back here." He offered, though it sounded lame when it came out of his mouth.
"Which, if people are looking to me to explain that, then...well...I've got absolutely no answer for them right now."

Kate felt very connected to Jack at this moment, his hand on her cheek and his thumb gently coercing the worry from her face. Her eyes could not peel away from his intense gaze and Kate wasn't sure she wanted them to. She had deep feelings for Jack, feelings that only deepened after Sawyer was killed back in LA. Jack was there for her, constantly at her side, caring for her to help her through her grief and the time they spent together while Kate was so emotionally vulnerable did nothing but increase her love for the man.
As she stood there reveling in Jack's affection, sadly Kate became aware once more of the reason for it. Sawyer was alive. He was here on the island and, while Kate felt an incredibly strong draw to Jack, she couldn't deny the feelings that rose within her at the thought of Sawyer being alive, too. The Southern bad boy had taken a piece of her heart, something Kate couldn't deny and had even given him cause to believe he was the one she chose. Kate didn't regret her meetings of intimacy with Sawyer, but right now, in Jack's arms and held by his openly loving eyes, Kate wasn't sure she could do it again.
A feeling of mild discomfort swelled within Kate. What was she doing? She longed to be with Jack every minute she was near him, then when she was with Sawyer her heart changed and wanted him. A small blush rose to Kate's cheeks while Jack formed his answer to her question. She couldn't make a decision between them now any more than she had been able to before they were rescued or while they were in LA before Sawyer was killed. Her heart, knowing Sawyer was alive and breathing within a two mile radius of her somewhere, all of a sudden wanted them both again. It was easier for her to devote it to Jack when Sawyer was dead, but now?
Kate couldn't do this again. She took a step back after Jack replied about them all heading to the beach, biting her lower lip and looking away as her hands were stuffed into her back pockets. She had to distance herself from Jack before she kissed him, took him right here in the jungle and ruined his life by not knowing who she wanted. Her body and mind wanted him right now, even her heart, but Kate knew how fickle she was. It wasn't fair to him and she'd be damned if she messed with him like she messed with Sawyer. It was time to grow up and stop this cycle that was hurting them all.
"Don't worry, Jack," Kate said after she had put a step or two of distance between them. "Whatever happens, I'll be here for you... just like you've always been for me." Kate looked back up at him, the battle within her obvious as her eyes likely betrayed her desires. She would always want Jack. The problem was, she also might always want Sawyer. Life was so unfair.
"We should probably start walking..."

As she pulled away, the space left an emptiness, and the jungle became a little colder without her near him, even if it was only a few steps away. His heart had skipped so many beats that he was afraid it'd never get back to a normal rhythm, but as Jack listened to Kate speak, about being there for him and walking, Jack found himself nodding out of his trace. "Yeah. Yeah, walking." Her hand slipped from his, and suddenly, he wasn't really quite sure what to do with his hands as they started to walk.
He stole slight glances at her as they walked side by side through the jungle. "Um, after you--" he couldn't bring himself to say 'died'. It was still too painful, even though she was standing right next to him. "--After it happened, I wanted to--" he narrowed his brows slightly as he thought of how he could word it. "I wanted to see if, you know, you had any family...or something. I talked to that Detective. Kevin?" he asked, and nodding slightly. "Yeah, I talked to him...and he said he hadn't a clue. He said you told him your parents died." He paused and looked over at her. Kevin had also said she had been married to him, but he left that part out. "I realised how little I know about you. And--" he brought a hand up, exhaling a breath in a sigh. "And I just...I just thought we could have had normal, you know?" he asked, looking from her to the jungle trees. "I thought that this was all over. I thought we were going home and I thought that we'd just be able to...live. To stop running and fighting to stay alive and just...start living again. Like normal people."
It hadn't been living in LA, that much was true; compared to Los Angeles, the Island was the lesser of two evils, but...it didn't seem fair. "Y'ever just wonder...why us? I mean, what did we do to---deserve all of this crap."

Kate moved ahead when Jack motioned and said "After you." She was actually rather glad to break some of the tension they were obviously sharing. Well, at least Kate was feeling the tension. She knew she harbored feelings for Jack, feelings that only grew with the way he sought to help her after Sawyer's murder. His ever constant presence and comforting was something that simply drew her to him even more. However, now they all seemed to be back on the island, a place where Kate could never seem to sort her feelings properly, and it was only magnified by the knowledge Sawyer existed here.
However, Kate gave pause to her steps as Jack tried to speak to her, his long pauses giving a growing discomfort to Kate for entirely different reasons. He seemed to be inept at speaking exactly what was on his mind, but Kate had a suspicion that what he was eluding to was something she could not accept. In fact, Kate was not only unaccepting of his unspoken words concerning an "incident" but she vehemently opposed them so much in her logical mind that she completely ignored them. Instead, her ears picked up on the name of the man she spoke with.
"You spoke to Kevin?" she asked, surprised. Kate wanted to ask how he was, if he looked good... if he had moved on, but she held her tongue and Jack went on.
Looking to the trees as they walked ever so slowly, Kate listened to Jack. Her heart and mind a jumbled mess of emotions and irrational thoughts. Was he implying he wanted them together? Or was he just saying he wished for a normal life? Kate's heart soared with the former and fell with the latter. She had no right to think he would want a life with her, not after what'd she'd done. Karma was a bitch.
"Yeah...," Kate said softly in reply to his final question, but she had already figured out the answer for herself just in the pondering of why Jack wouldn't want her. "Karma is a bitch," she shrugged. "At least in my case." Kate looked at Jack. "But I don't know why it's happening to you, Jack. You've never done anything wrong as far as I can tell. You're just.. great."
