“I know,” Libby replied softly as they stepped inside. “But there will be other dates... nights!” she quickly amended. They were best friends. It was New Year’s, and they were dressed up to go out but it wasn’t a date. They didn’t date, at least not each other. Did they?
Feeling her cheeks flush slightly, it didn’t help her confusion when Charlie kissed her on the cheek before disappearing to the bathroom. Had this been a normal day, a week or more ago, she might have been worried he was going to the washroom to get a hit, but not tonight, not right now. Instead she touched her fingers lightly to her cheek, a smile on her lips, and stepped up to place their order.
The poor kid behind the counter could barely keep his eyes in his head as Libby approached the counter. Nor could he keep his eyes on her face. Placing the order and paying the bill, she stepped to the side slightly and awkwardly. People were still staring, but luckily Charlie didn’t take long before returning.
“I hope a Whopper will suit,” she said with a smile. Burgers, fries, soda... this was going to kill her diet but looking at Charlie beside her, his arm around her waist, she figured it would be worth it.

As Charlie stepped up, pulling out his wallet, the pimple-y faced boy said it had already been paid. "Hey!" Charlie said, looking at Libby with a slight frown. "That's supposed to be me! My money exchanging hands!" However, it was over and done with. A sigh escaped Charlie's lips, and he shook his head slightly. "Don't you dare think of taking out a single pound for the taxi, Missy."
Charlie felt his eyes wander, looking up at the big menu, before he looked down at the kid behind the counter. His eyes were firmly locked on Libby, and not in the proper places, either. "Oi! Eyes up! Go get our food! Sodding children."
The food came, a big giant bag full of grease, and he wondered how long it would stay down in his stomach. He hoped until long after his date with Libby. Wait, was this a date? If this had been a date, he would have paid. Well, if he hadn't gone into the bathroom to psych himself into being able to go around with Libby, he would have been able to pay for it.
Charlie grabbed the big bag, and then Libby's hand in the other. "C'mon, let's go. And you! Go fry some french fries or something." he told the kid, looking over his shoulder. They exited, and Charlie managed to hail a cab. He opened the door, letting Libby get in before he climbed into the cab.
"Where to?"
"The beach." Charlie told the cabbie, before he watched as the man frowned.
"Hey, no food in the cab. It seeps into the leather."
Charlie frowned deeply. This was not going to ruin a perfect night. No, no, Charlie had too many things go wrong this night to let a fucking cabbie ruin it. "Look, I am not going to let ANYTHING ruin this night, understand me?" Charlie said, and he fished a 100 dollar bill out of his pocket. "Take us. To the beach. NOW."
And thankfully, the cab started to move off towards the beach.

Libby chuckled a bit at Charlie’s performance. She hadn’t meant to emasculate him but she hadn’t wanted to keep the kid waiting. Besides, a few bucks would hardly break her bank account.
A few thousand bucks wouldn’t.
It was amusing to have him protecting her honour, though, against the gawking teenager. It was adorable and flattering. A Gentleman was probably not the term used very often to describe Charlie Pace, Rock God, but he really could be in his own way; it was part of what drew her to him. So many women threw themselves at him because of his rock star image, but it was the sweet, quiet, understanding Charlie that she loved.
Following her friend outside, Libby slid carefully into the cab, adjusting the skirts of her dress and looking over as Charlie took his seat next to her. For a moment it looked like they would have to find another mode of transportation, but he made up for not paying for the food by impressively bribing the cabbie to forget his rules.

This night was going...well, not so perfect, but more perfect now that they were off towards the beach. Granted, with a bag of deep-fried grease in a cab with Los Angeles' pissiest cab driver, sure, but...but they were alone. Together. It was New Years, and Charlie was drug-free for the first time in longer than he could remember, Libby hadn't had any episodes since Charlie had went into the hospital, and in their own little dysfunctional way, Charlie and Libby were having the perfect New Years.
Charlie felt the cab stop, and he looked out the window to see the roll of the Ocean. A smile crossed onto his face, and he almost lept out of the cab. Rushing over to the other side, he opened Libby's door, watching as she stepped out. He tapped his hand twice on the top of the cab before the cab driver drove away. His hand found hers once again, fingers lacing through hers as they walked onto the sand towards the waves. The moonlight danced across the waves, shimmering, and for a brief second, a feeling of deja vu passed over the rockstar. Of course he had came out to the ocean many times...but this felt different. He looked over at Libby, half expecting her to have the same feeling, but then caught himself. Silly, he thought silently. Why would she be feeling like that? You're just being bloody paranoid.
"So...so I guess we should sit and eat, then."

To most people, a New Years spent this way would be a disaster, but luckily she and Charlie were not most people. They were both unstable and both recovering, so for the recovering drug addict and mental patient this was as close to perfect as anything in life could be.
When the cab slowed to a stop, Libby reached for her door handle but stopped herself when Charlie practically bolted from his side and rounded quickly to hers to open the door for her. Stepping out gracefully, she wondered how many of his... ‘lady friends’ got to see this side of him, the sweet, almost awkward, gentlemanly side. Very endearing. Threading her fingers through his, she couldn’t keep the smile off her face until the ground began to get uneven and started shifting beneath her high heels. She could never quite decide why but she hadn’t been to the beach since she had last been released from Santa Rosa. She loved the smell of the air, the sound of the waves and the feel of the sand beneath her toes, but for some reason she had been avoiding it. Perhaps for the same reason her smile fell and her stomach began to turn slightly.
“Oh, uh, yes,” she replied, trying to ignore the feeling. She wouldn’t dare have Charlie think that this idea of his made her even the slightest bit uncomfortable. “I’m going to break my ankle if I try walking too far on the sand in these shoes.”
