Penny burst into the front doors of the Roosevelt Hotel, nearly frantic in her urgency. Desmond was back. He was here. But he hadn't called her. Why hadn't he called her? She was filled with questions and fears, and she was sure she wouldn't be able to breathe until she saw his face again.
Nearly a week had passed since a freighter carrying the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 had arrived in LA. She knew, deep in her heart, that Desmond was with them, that they had all been together with him on that godforsaken rock in the middle of the ocean. So why hadn't he called her? Did he know about David?
The fight with David had been horrible. He didn't want to let her go, and was furious at her for lying all these years. And she couldn't blame him for that. After all, she'd been married to him for four years without ever telling him that she was still in love with someone else, and that she would never be able to stop searching for him as long as there was hope he might still be alive. How could she expect him to handle that sort of thing?
Penny scanned the lobby of the hotel, expecting to see him just walking around somewhere. But there was no sign of him. She stood there for a long moment, willing him to appear, but to no avail.
Finally, she let the exhaustion take over her and she slipped into one of the big cushy sofas in the lobby, and buried her face in her hands. "Oh, Desmond," she sighed.

((I just left a thread, so I may as well join this one))
Miles was coming back from Serenity Park to the place where he'd last heard was the whereabouts of Benjamin Linus. The one man he needed to find, as the one man who could give him what he wanted.
He walked into the hotel via the revolving doors and walked over to the lobby, casting glances at the front desk and wondering how they could get a look at their register. Miles knew a few of the names Ben liked to go under, and if something seemed suspicious it would be something to check out.
It wasn't until he realized who was sitting right in front of him, that his attentions snapped from the front desk and to the woman he's just been talking about. Penelope Widmore. He regonized her from the photograph Naomi carried with her. She'd been sent to find out about her little boyfriend or something from Widmore Snr.
"Penelope" he breathed, and then went over and crouched down in front of her. "You're Miss Widmore right?"

((Why not... since I don't have a Desmond... Again...))
After giving in to exhaustion and worry for a few moments, Penny sat up and looked up at the front desk. Of course, it was silly to just keep sitting here in the lobby waiting for him to appear. After all the searching she had done for him, did she really expect him to just walk up out of nowhere and find her? She'd been searching for him for so long, what was a few more minutes?
She was about to go up to the front desk and ask if there was a Desmond Hume staying here, but something made her stop. After the phone call from Desmond, she had been sure that her search was not one-sided. That he'd been looking for her just as long as she'd been looking for him. But if he was here, if he was back, and if he wanted to see her, why hadn't he contacted her? Was something wrong? Had something happened? Or had he just decided that he didn't want to see her after all?
It wouldn't have been the first time that Desmond had changed his mind abruptly. Maybe it was all too easy for Desmond to say that he loved her and missed her when he was thousands of miles away in the middle of the ocean, but when she was just a plane trip away, his old fear of commitment just kicked in all over again. She knew she couldn't bear it if he pushed her aside once again. If he tried, she might just have to kill him.
She was still mentally debating these things when she heard a voice right next to her, calling her name. It wasn't Desmond's voice... she knew his voice by heart. She looked up and saw a man she didn't recognize, crouching down in front of her. "Yes?" she inquired politely. "Can I help you?"

((That's harsh, dude. Not sure how I'd be at RPing Desmond... besides saying "brother" a lot... )) Miles put a hand out on her arm as he crouched in front of her still. "I worked for your father" His eyes hardened almost defensively as he looked at her, knowing that if she was anything like her father was he would have to be weary. He refused to smile, although he knew that type of thing would be reassuring right now. The woman looked deeply distressed. "You weren't here for..." he wasn't sure if he should say the name but didn't bother to trust his own judgement, "Linus, were you?" They was hired to find Linus... Obviously, they didn't hand his head over on a silver platter; so perhaps Widmore sent his daughter instead. Never get a man to do a woman's job. His thoughts went to Keamy. A raging factory of testosterone and he still failed. Perhaps, Miles thought, he should be more concerned about Widmore Junior than he was about Widmore Senior. After all, he'd underestimated women with money before and ended up the worse off for it. Miles wasn't about to be screwed with twice.

Penny's thoughts were still on Desmond, and her distracted eyes darted this way and that, in hopes of getting a glimpse of him. She realized she was being a bit rude, which was unlike her, but she'd waited for him for so long that she literally couldn't stand knowing he was so close yet still not in sight. At the mention of her father, she focused her eyes on him. She hadn't spoken to her father in several weeks, ever since Desmond had called her on Christmas Eve. That was when she knew, without a doubt, that he had lied to her and manipulated her. She was even beginning to think that he'd somehow orchestrated Desmond's disappearance on that damn island.
"My father?" she repeated, searching his face. He seemed agitated at the mention of her father, and the feeling was mutual.
As the man mentioned the name Linus, Penny froze. She'd met a man once by that name, a Benjamin Linus, but she didn't know who he was. She'd found him to be unnerving, with his bulging blue eyes and engimatic expression. She shuddered involuntarily at the memory of him. "I no longer speak with my father. I'm actually here for Desmond Hume. But Linus... do you mean Ben Linus?"

((don't worry, I have a "feeling" Dessy is on his way))
"Of course I mean Ben Linus!" Miles shouted, his temper getting the better of him. He was sick of everyone's lies. This woman had to have been here for Ben. For her father. Unless she needed to talk to an Oceanic 815-er.
"Your father hired us to get Ben. Now I'm trying to find him." Miles lowered his voice, he stood up and kicked one of the couches she wasn't sitting in. "How could you not be looking for Ben?" His eyes narrowed accusingly.

Penny was taken aback by his reaction, but she kept her voice calm and even. "Mr.... I don't believe I caught your name... My father and I are frequently at odds. I know very little of his business dealings and I agree with none of them. He doesn't keep me informed on many of the things that he does, and I prefer it that way."
She took another sideways glance, still hoping for Desmond to appear, then pushed her hair back behind her ears. "I met Ben Linus once, and I didn't care for the man. Whatever reason my father wants him, I have no knowledge. I'm only here to see Desmond; I know he was on the island where the 815 survivors landed. I love him, and my father forcibly kept us apart, even going so far as to lie to me and tell me that he was dead. Do you really think I could continue to be loyal to such a man, even if he is my father?"

Miles didn't know how to answer this. He was on edge because he hadn't found Ben yet, that was all it was.
"OK fine. You hate your father." Miles responded blankly and sat in the cushioned seat beside her, still jittering.
"Look. I need to find him..." Miles said honestly, "and I'll help you try and find Desmond, right? If you can help me out."
Miles tapped on the arm-rest of the seat like a strung-out junkie. "I need to get back to the island, man. There are things I need to do there..."

Penny thought about this for a minute. She knew a little about the island, just from her search for Desmond. And she knew her father wanted it, but she didn't know why. If Ben Linus was connected to the island, that easily explained why he wanted the man.
A slow smile spread across her face, and for once, Desmond was far from her thoughts. Her attention was focused on this man, who still had not given her his name. It would be interesting, for once, to see what would happen when she, not her father, was holding all the cards.
She held out her hand to the man. "OK, I'll help you," she said. "But you're going to have to tell me everything you know."

He was late. As always, Desmond had lost track of time. He was nervous, and he had butterflys in his stomache as he rushed down the highway of Los Angeles. At the same time, he was eager to see the one person his heart yearned for. He had been stranded on an island for over 3 years, not once getting a sign of hope for seeing her again until recently. He knew that both had so many questions left unanswered, and both were desperate to rekindle their past relationship. He was anxious to see her, and his heart was pounding out of his chest.
As he drove down the street to the hotel where Penny was, he began to worry about whether or not she would hate him. What if she wouldn't take him back, after all he had done to her years before? What if she already discovered a new soul mate, and this time the man hadn't got cold feet and left her before the wedding? He was almost frightened to park in the lot for the hotel. His arms were shaking, and he parked nearly sideways in the parking space. He sat in the car for a moment, unable to move. He was frozen with fear, but eventually found the courage and hope inside of himself to get out.
He quickly unbuckled his seatbelt, rushing to the doors of the building. He ran through the revolving doors, frantically searching the main entrance for Penny. To his left his eyes widened. Penny sat, less than ten feet away. He could almost reach out and touch her. But before he darted in that direction, he noticed a familiar man talking to her. It was one of the people that came to the island during their last few days of being stranded there...Miles. Desmond had never trusted the man, nor become a good ally with him. They had somewhat of a mutual hatred toward each other, for absolutely no reason at all. They just didn't get along well.
Desmond, now focusing on Penny, spoke loudly so that she could hear his voice. He stuttered at first a bit, but got ahold of himself and said, "Penny...it's really you." He smiled, waiting for her to turn his direction. At this moment his whole body became warm, and everything just seem to be right again. This time, he would have to fix his mistakes. This was the least he could do for the woman he loved. After all he'd done to her, he had to make things right.

All of her strength and resolve for getting back at her father crumbled to pieces at the sound of his voice. So familiar and sweet, like music to her ears. She turned and looked up at him, the emotion so powerful and overwhelming that she couldn't breathe for a moment. Her heart pounded loudly in her ears, while her eyes swimmed with tears.
Penny couldn't move. It was like the moment was frozen in time, like some kind of soppy romantic film. "Desmond," she whispered. She had so much she wanted to say, but upon seeing him, she couldn't remember a word of it.
Finally, she stood up on wobbly legs and took a few steps toward him. She felt like a baby deer, tottering about on weak, spindly legs. She reached out and put her hand on his face, feeling the warm planes of his face, and the scratchy wires of an over-grown beard. And the reality of it began to sink in. He was here. Her Desmond. After waiting so long and seatrching and hoping... he was here.
She flung her arms around him and buried her face in his shoulder. "Oh, Desmond...."

Before Desmond could say anything else he was embraced in a hug from Penny. He didn't know what to say, and he just held her tight. He didn't want to let go. He didn't want to have to leave her again. All Desmond wanted now was to be with her. He eventually let go and looked into her eyes. He knew she was the one for him.
"Penny, I-" he stopped, giving her a warm smile as he did. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't 'ave left you. There's so much I need to explain to you. Please, forgive me." He didn't know what else to say. There was so much that had happened since he last saw Penny. How could he manage to explain everything to her? How could he tell her that he had been stranded on an island for three years, longing to come back and see her again? And what if she hadn't felt the same way, then what? Desmond looked back at Penelope. For the first time since he got back from the island, he felt at home.

Penny looked up at him, tears sparkling in her eyes and her whole face lit up in a brilliant smile. She shook her hear and placed her finger on his lips gently. "Shhhh..." She said. "It doesn't matter. None of it matters. Not now. All that matters is that you're here."
She ran her hands through his thick, shaggy hair. She loved his hair long; it suited him more than she had ever expected. The beard would have to go, though... but for now, she thought he was the most beautiful sight she'd ever seen.
Leaning close to him, she kissed him deeply. The taste of him, so familiar and sweet, his scent so warm and masculine... it was all perfect. This was what she had been waiting for. And it was definitely worth the wait.
"I love you, Desmond," she said "I've never stopped. I searched for you..."

(( aw man... got stuck in the middle of a sappy reunion )) Penny agreed to help him, so Miles stood back and watched the scene which seemed to play out in slow motion in front of him. It was sickening and Miles was almost loosing his cool. If he hadn't needed that information so badly, he wouldn't have waited but finding Ben was his reason for coming here. Miles rolled his eyes, stretched out his legs and waited patiently through the kisses and 'I love you's. It was half amusing watching them through this elaborate tirade. Miles finally got agitated enough to break them out of their little love cocoon. He called over to them obnoxiously, "He-llll-oooo. Remember? I think we were talking once..." He grinned at them and gave the loverboy an exaggerated thumbs-up before raising his eyebrows expectantly at Penelope.

Desmond was no longer worried. In fact, he was completely calm knowing she had been searching for him just as he had been for her. Neither of them gave up on the other. Feeling Penny's lips touch his for the first time in nearly three-and-a-half years was amazing. He didn't want to let go of her. He wanted to stay where he was standing forever. Hearing the words from her mouth reassured him that they could start over. It gave Desmond hope that one day he would be married to the love of his life. It was almost as if the last piece of the puzzle was set, completing his purpose in the world.
He held Penny tightly, unable to speak. For a while, all he could do was kiss her, and show his love for her. That was, until an unfriendly voice interrupted their romantic reunion. Desmond could almost hear the cruel sarcasm in Miles' tone, but let him finish talking.
"He-llll-oooo. Remember? I think we were talking once..." Desmond released Penny, still holding her hand. Miles had always been one to have a negative attitude about everything. He was arrogant, conceited, and cold-hearted. All of these qualities were very big pet peeves of Desmond, which is why the two never hit it off in the first place. Miles could never learn to keep his trap shut when necessary, and always spoke at terrible times. Desmond turned, facing the undesired man.
His words were rash. Without thinking, Desmond began talking. "Look. I don't have any idea as to what you want, but whatever it is...leave Penny out of it. Your obviously unwanted by either of us, and I suggest you take a hint and leave." Desmond knew he was being unreasonable, but he knew Miles wasn't going to give up that easily. He wasn't sure whether or not Penny actually had business with him, but he wanted her to stay away from this mysterious man at all costs. Whatever he was up to was no good, and he didn't want Penny to get caught in the middle of it. He knew that at any point now, Miles would fight back, and probably make some cocky remark or make a very humorous face. But Desmond was not about to let this man think that he was in any way humorous.
