The Christmas tree was already dying. Little brown needles from the branches of the once-proud Douglas Fir tree now littered the plush carpeting of the spacious penthouse flat that Penny shared with her husband, David. He'd been away during Christmas, luckily for her. He hadn't been home when Desmond had made his phone call, the one that he had promised to make 8 years earlier.
Hearing his voice had brought such powerful emotions rushing back into her heart. Now, all the years apart seemed to have faded away. She had always known that she still loved him, and had always hoped that she would find him again. But the mere sound of his voice was almost like a dream to her; like something out of a fairy tale. It was like he was reaching across time and space to touch her heart again and awaken everything that had ever been between them. Knowing that he was out there, he was alive, and he still loved her, it changed everything. It was a balm to her soul, soothing what had been hurting for so long that she had forgotten that it hurt. She knew now that it was meant to be; that he was going to find a way to come back to her, and that at last they would finally be together.
There was only one problem. David. Her husband. She had married him after Desmond had disappeared in the boat race, and her father had convinced her of his death. It had broken her heart to believe it, and she had almost called off her engagement to David out of grief. But he'd been so sweet, so supportive, so understanding. She had decided that there were worse things to do than to be married to him. She didn't exactly love him, but she cared for him. He was almost like her best friend.
But for years, she had been hiding things from him. Ever since Mrs. Hawking had visited her and told her that Desmond was still alive, she'd been searching for Desmond. But she couldn't tell David. He never would have understood.
Now that she knew for sure that Desmond was alive and that he was coming back to her, however, she knew she was going to have to tell David the truth. She had the paperwork to file for divorce from him, but she hadn't had the heart to do it. Not without talking to him first and telling him why. And since he was about to come home any minute, now was the time to tell him.
It was going to be hard, to tell her best friend that she didn't want to be married to him anymore. She didn't know how he was going to react. But she had to do it, and soon. The sooner, the better.
