The alarm clock was ringing loudly. Desmond looked over at the time. It was 9:00 a.m. He would be meeting Penny at the coffee shop at 9:30, and he rushed out of bed to get ready, fearing that he would be late as usual. First, he took a quick shower, and then used the rest of his hygiene items. He stumbled over to his dresser, pulling out a pair of jeans. He nearly hopped into them as he went to his closet to get the rest of his clothes. He found a decent shirt, and then put on his shoes and socks. As he walked out the door, he grabbed his jacket, heading off to his car.
By the time he'd gotten to the coffee shop, he noticed that Penny hadn't been here yet. This was great, because he would be able to rub it in to Penny about her being late instead. He always had many laughs with her, even though he was serious most days. Desmond took off his coat, placing it on the back of his chair and taking a seat. Now all he had to do was wait. Penny would be here soon, and for the first time since coming back to Los Angeles, they would have a chance to talk. And probably what Desmond was most anxious to talk about was their relationship. They had a lot of catching up to do. A lot.
He didn't know where to start. He had a lot of explaining to do, and some things worried Desmond. He didn't know what her reaction would be, even though they both had wanted a clean start, and not to worry about the past. Just here and now, and where to go from there. Penny meant the world to Desmond, and he wouldn't let her slip through his fingers again. He made a mistake that he couldn't let happen again. She was everything he could ask for, and nothing mattered without her being by his side. This time, he would be ready.

Penny was still getting used to being in LA. Her body was still running on London time, and she'd been completely exhausted by the time she dropped off to sleep. As a result, she wound up doing something she almost never did--she overslept. When she awoke, the sun was shining brightly through the window of her hotel room. She sat up quickly and hurriedly began to prepare herself to meet Desmond.
She took a shower and got dressed, then dried her hair patially, allowing it to stay slightly damp, so that it would be wavy instead of straight. Her hands were practically shaking as she put on her makeup. She didn't know why she would be nervous about seeing Desmond, when she'd already seen him yesterday and knew she still loved him. But there were still so many things she needed to say to him, and she wasn't sure exactly how it would go.
When she was finally ready, she hurried out of the room and headed toward the coffee shop, which was only a block away from the hotel.
She smiled as she approached and saw him sitting by the window. She had to admit, she liked his hair long. She never would have expected to see him that way, but he looked good. It was amazing how he could look so different, and yet still be so familiar to her eyes. It was as if he'd never left.
She went inside and ordered a cup of coffee and a muffin, then hurried over to his table. "Hi, Des," she said simply. "This must be the first time in history that I've been late and you've been on time."

Desmond was thinking to himself when Penny entered the coffee house. He didn't notice her until she walked up to the table and said hi. He looked up at her with a large smile, very pleased to see her. "Looks like someone's late." He smirked as he said this, with a joking manner in his voice. He couldn't hold himself back from teasing her about it. After all, she had done it for years, and he'd always been waiting for the moment to get back at her for it. Penny's radiance filled the room, and Desmond could only focus on her. This was the happiest Desmond had been since he had been rescued. Just being with Penny made everything seem like nothing. All that mattered was that she was next to him, and that's how he wanted it to be.
Desmond continued. "I'm glad we have a chance to be alone together. I think we both have a lot on our minds, a lot to talk about." He took a sip of his coffee, which was black. He'd always liked his coffee plain, no creamer or sugar added. The bitterness hadn't ever bothered Desmond, although most people didn't understand why he didn't want it any sweeter. As Penny took her seat, Desmond was suddenly overjoyed. Penny was the one person who could make him happy without having to do anything. Just her presence soothed Desmond, and cleared his mind to focus just about him and her.

Penny smiled at him, just drinking in the sight of him. It had been so long, and she had missed him so much. Just when it had seemed that it was all futile, that there was no chance of ever seeing him again, suddenly he was here. She'd waited for it for so long that it almost didn't seem real. It was more like a dream or a wish that was just a finger's length away. And yet it wasn't. It was real, finally.
But he was right about one thing. They did have a lot to talk about. And some of it wasn't going to be easy. When she told him the news she had for him, she wasn't sure that beautiful smile would last. She wished she could just forget all of it, not talk, but just be with him, hold him and kiss him. It was all she had wanted to do in all those years away from him; to feel his body next to hers, and to taste his lips as he kissed her. The issues of the past, the things that had separated them, they all seemed silly now. Actually, they had always seemed silly to her. If she didn't care if they had her father's approval, why should he? But back then, his fear of commitment had been the real issue. It had driven a wedge between them, filling him with uncertainty. But she had known for sure; she had always known that he was the one for her. That they were meant to be. That was why what she had to tell him was going to hurt even more.
But she wanted to hear his story first. Otherwise, she might not hear it at all. Obviously, he had things to say, and she wanted him to have a chance to say them.
"Yes, I suppose we do." Penny said. "We have 4 years of catching up to do. What do you want to talk about first?"
