Your voice was the soundtrack of my summer, do you know you're unlike other, 'cause you'll always be my thunder, I said--
Liam's voice filled the house, coming from the speakers in the bathroom. Megan had been watching Teletubbies or some strange show, and she was kept occupied. And even if she did wake up, Charlie was in the next room. She turned back to the counter, moving to push the door closed to only a crack. Grabbing the box, her eyes scanned the blue lettering. Two minutes it said. Two sodding minutes? She checked her watch, and realised that it had only been 30 seconds from when she had last checked it.
"Bloody HELL."
A harsh and impatient sigh escaped her lips and she threw the box into the trash. She wrang her fingers as she paced in the bathroom back and forth and back and forth, wondering when the little bloody blue strip would change already. This was horrific pain, this waiting. How did two minutes seem like an eternity? Two minutes was supposed to be how long you were supposed to brush your teeth in. How long a song was supposed to be. Two minutes was NOT how long this was supposed to take. Karen hadn't taken the test before; with Megan, she hadn't needed to. She had wound up in the hospital before she even had the chance to. She had been feeling sick ever since they had left Australia, and she passed it off as the flu to Liam. However, a twisting in her gut made her wonder. They hadn't actually spoken about it much, however, Liam had suggested that it would be nice in the future to build the family. Megan needed a brother or a sister, he had said. However...was this the sooner that he spoke of? Was it too soon?
She slid down to sit next to the toilet. She looked at her watch. Two minutes. Two minutes was over. She felt the growing sting of tears in the back of her eyes, and she closed them, bringing her knees up to her chest as she sat against the toilet by the door. Why was she so terrified of the answer? She knew the answer was simple and secretly hated herself for thinking that way.
Being pregnant with Megan, all the times that Liam wouldn't call her back while they were on tour, all the times that it had been perfect when he was home and then they'd argue or fight...Karen wasn't sure if she could do it again. She wasn't sure if she could bring someone else into the world into such chaos. However, Liam was clean. He had been clean for more than a year, and no longer was he the drug-taking party-boy, but clean, drug free father. No longer did he sleep with random women (something that Karen had always worried about and had confronted him about countless times before he got tested) but he slept with her all night, every night and even sometimes in the middle of the day. She needed to stop thinking about the past. This was the future; the future would hold beautiful things. Brilliant and beautiful things.
Karen took in a breath and reached up, taking the tester in her hand. Her eyes were kept closed as she brought it down, before slowly opening them. A sob escaped her mouth, both happy and sad. "Oh god," she whispered, and was thankful that the recording of DriveShaft's first show at the Man-Chester was playing loud enough on the CD player to drown out the sound of her crying. She pressed her head against her knees, trying to stop her crying because it shifted back and forth between happy and sad tears and it shouldn't have been sad.
Karen tried to reach up on the sink for a towel, but a drinking glass fell, shattering loudly on the floor. She jolted and let out a slight yell before covering her mouth.
He wondered if he needed to actually be on drugs to watch it.
Charlie looked at the sleeping Megan on the bed, and then back at the fat, many-coloured creatures that danced and mumbled around a very green land. And what the bloody hell was up with that baby in the sun, anyway? And Charlie was pretty sure that one of them were gay.
Hearing the sounds of the CD player, Charlie's brows came together. "Kare?" he called, stepping towards the bathroom. He knocked lightly, pushing the door open with one eye closed. "Y'better not be naked in here 'cause there'll be trouble, hello?" he asked, and instantly frowned as he saw Karen on the floor, surrounded by the broken glass. Tears were in her eyes and on her face.
"Oh, hey, hey." Charlie instantly said, rushing in to kneel by her. "Hey. What's up, buttercup?"
She knew that Charlie was keeping something from her. Lifting her head, she looked at her brother-in-law, trying to smile but it came out sad. "I'm..pregnant." However, the smile only stayed for two seconds before it twisting into a sob again. "Charlie." she thought him through her tears, grabbing onto his hands through his hoodie pocket. "Charlie, don't lie to me. Please, please don't lie to me. There's something wrong with Liam, isn't there?"
Pregnant?! God, that was great, that was smashing! It was--oh god. Charlie felt his eyes cast down to the floor, muttering something in responce until Karen grabbed his head, lifting it up quickly to meet her eyeline. "Karen." Charlie said, his voice cracking. "Karen, I--just leave it alone, okay? I got it handled. I've got--I've got it taken CARE of, love, just--"
Karen stood up quickly, rushing out of the bathroom and into the livingroom where Liam was curled up on the couch. She reached for his shoulder, spinning him around to face her. "Tell me." she said, trying to make her voice sound harsh, but in the end, it came out simply broken. "Tell me where you've been going--"
"Karen--"
"Shut UP, Charlie!" Karen yelled and then looked at Liam once more, trying to keep her face from twisting up in a sob. She sucked in a breath, and tried to make her face a mask of stone. "Tell me, Liam Pace. Tell me where you've been going at night." She moved, smacking Liam hard on the chest. "Tell me!" she yelled, tears coming freely now. "Tell me why you can't come home to me at night! Tell me who you've been SCREWING behind my back!" After every sentence, a smack was issued on some part of Liam's upper body.
Charlie moved, seeing the now awake Megan, and he could feel the hot burning sting of tears, as well as his hands start to shake. "Hey, darling." he said, though his voice was choked with emotion. He moved quickly to shut the door, and then moved to hop onto the bed, trying to stay as happy and as calm as possible for Megan. "Let's watch television, alright?"
