Looking for a job was one of Shannon's least favorite things in the world. But with the nightmares getting steadily worse, she simply couldn't continue on with nothing to do every day. Maybe if she had a job, something to keep her mind busy all day, she would be too tired to have the dreams anymore.
It had made sense at the time. But she wasn't exactly oozing employable skills. After all, what kind of job could a former dance instructor get in LA? Especially since it had been more than 2 years since she'd danced at all, except at a club. So for the most part, she had just been applying at clothing stores, places where she liked to shop. Maybe the familiarity would be a bonus, and they'd consider hiring her on that basis.
But after a long day of putting in tedious applications, she was now on her way home. She decided to cut through the park, as it was the quickest way to her apartment.
The night seemed unusually dark as she glanced up at the inky black sky. There wasn't a star in sight, and even the moon seemed to have been swallowed up by blackness. Usually, in the middle of LA, the lights from the buildings all around would combine with the smog, creating a weird, filmy orange light that hung over everything, but tonight it was just black. Even the lights in the park weren't working.
She shivered as a cold breeze blew through, making the hair on the back of her neck stand on end. And that's when she heard the footsteps behind her. Her body tensed as she began to walk faster. The footsteps behind her increased in pace as well. Her chest felt tight as she moved a little faster. But she could hear someone's breath behind her, feel it on the back of her neck.
Reaching in her purse, she fumbled around for the pepper spray that Boone had insisted she carry everywhere. But just as her fingers closed around it, she felt a hand grab her shoulder.
She screamed, then everything went black.
