Kate Austen is a horribly complex yet amazingly simple woman of diverse character. She is very smart yet makes the oddest choices that seem to conflict with good judgment. She is stubborn to a fault at times and yet can be incredibly indecisive. She longs for stability and love, yet cannot stay in one place long enough to achieve either. In short, Kate can be like an adolescent, and though she is very caring and friendly she will also be quite distant and hide her inner self from others.
Sometimes, Kate’s concern and care for others gets her in trouble, but as much as it can be a weakness, it is also a strength. She often makes her own choices that will go against someone’s wishes if she believes her intervention is more important. Once she gets to know someone, it is very difficult for her to be anything but loyal. When it comes to romance, though, Kate is noncommittal at best. She is driven by her inner fears and doubts, along with her need to keep others from being harmed.
While Kate can be a great person to lean upon in the heat of survival, she should not be expected to be there when you wake up in the morning. She is inwardly tormented and torn by her past mistakes and seeks neither to relive them nor to let anyone else discover the true depths of their impact or existence. Her heart is better guarded than Fort Knox, but it is entirely likely that once she trusts someone enough to love them, it would be just as difficult to escape as it was to enter.
Any Interesting History?; Lots.
Born in a small country town somewhere in Iowa, Kate Austen was raised by her mother, Dianne Janssen, and a man she believed to be her father, Sam Austen. She had a good life while they were married, but when the two divorced when Kate was only five, her world changed dramatically. Her mother remarried to a man named Wayne, a man who was neither of good character or habits.
Kate kept in touch with Sam and it was likely his influence that helped keep her a good student throughout her youth as well as a decent person. Her friend, Tom, also helped her along, but time only made Wayne worse. He began abusing Dianne and making inappropriate advances on Kate. One day she was scrap-booking and noted a date on the back of a photograph indicating it was impossible for Sam to be her dad. Kate was horrified and felt the need to get as far from Wayne as possible. Her solution was blowing Wayne up in their home, planning ahead and taking out an insurance policy for her mother and making it look like arson.
Kate would have been fine, but she confessed her actions to her mother who in turn claimed she loved Wayne and turned Kate into the police. Kate ran, but not before confronting Sam. He confirmed her knowledge of him not being her father, and that Wayne was. Kate was in disbelief as she ran away, from then on a fugitive from the law and never coming back to the small Iowa town for many years.
Some time later, she heard her mother was dying and returned back to town to try to make amends. Her childhood friend, Tom, was by then a doctor and married with a family. He helped Kate, still caring deeply for her, but when Dianne saw Kate she began screaming for help. Tom tried to help Kate escape but in the process was shot and killed by the police in pursuit. Kate was forced to flee the scene.
Some time later, Kate was in Florida under the alias of “Monica.” Her lying and manipulating had gotten better and she was able to pull off identity fraud near flawlessly. Enough so that she dated and fell in love with a police officer named Kevin Callis. They were married and Kate thought things would be fine. She called the US Marshall who had been chasing her to beg him to leave her alone now. He agreed if she would settle down, fully knowing Kate couldn’t. He was not proved wrong when Kate panicked after a pregnancy scare and drugged Kevin, telling him everything of her criminal past and then fleeing again.
Kate then made a trip to New Mexico where she teamed up with other criminals in an attempt to rob a bank. Her only goal was something in the safety deposit box: Tom’s toy airplane. She ended up turning on the other thieves and made off with the toy to Australia. She worked on a farm and when she went to leave, the man she worked for turned her in for the reward after figuring out whom she was. Kate was caught by Marshall Edward Mars, the man who had chased her for years, and was on Oceanic Flight 815 back to the States when it crashed on the mysterious island.
On the island, Kate found many friends among the survivors. After their initial shock that she was a wanted woman, they all embraced her for who she was now and didn’t question her past. She grew close to Jack and Sawyer, loving both of them in different ways although she was unsure what that meant. The moonlight reflected off the cascading water as it fell into the pool below as Kate watched the flickering glow. She sat silently perched on a rock as if enchanted by its rhythm, the sound of the constant barrage of water slipping into water was steady and almost intoxicating. Songs of a lone cricket serenaded her in her as if to instill a false peace in its listeners amid their chaotic and civilized land.
Sadly its effort was in vain. Kate was neither enchanted nor peaceful as she sat observing the cadence of the small naturescape surrounding her. Her inner turmoil and resulting emotions were as that of the turbulence and the events that followed after the plane initially crashed on the island. Kate had no idea how she got into the position she was now, in a battle between her heart and mind. The decision should have been an easy one, one of both logic and happy endings, but it wasn’t. Nothing was ever easy, especially not for her.
The water flowed down over the fountain and a tear flowed down her cheek. It was dark. No one was awake. She was alone. This was how things had always been, or mostly. It was how she had foreseen her life, especially after realizing her trepidation with Kevin, a meager life consisting of emptiness and unfulfilled longings. Yet now, here she was, amid people who considered her their friend, in a place she never dreamed to be, connected by a series of events only imaginable by Hollywood filmmakers and novelists. This was where the journey had brought Kate and left her, but what she faced was something even she never expected.
Kate moved from her place on the rock ledge of the fountain and walked the short distance to the small form cradled in a blanket and lying in the arms of a man whom Kate knew she cared for. Aaron, just a baby yet one who was recently stripped of any family but the sleeping doctor who cradled him. Kate looked at the sleeping pair, wonder filling her heart as she did. Jack, a man who stole a part of her heart whether she would admit it or not, and a child in desperate need of a mother. Both of them in need of love. Perhaps all three of them.
Kate used the back of her hand to wipe the tear from her face then gently traced the baby’s face with her finger, in awe of her new position as surrogate mother. Aaron needed her. Jack, well she wasn’t sure he needed anyone, but she knew what he wanted. The question and conflict in Kate’s heart was a common one. Was it time to run again?
