Wow, such a depressed guy, Dennis thought to himself. That was probably why he spread his bad attitude around. And he still needed to make up his mind. Maybe, maybe not? Probably drinking some sort of depress-o expresso. "You take forever to say nothing," Dennis said.
"And maybe you should choose your words more carefully," Dennis snapped. He didn't bother trying to cool it anymore, Miles didn't deserve his effort. "If you actually put some of your time into being respectful to people, your life would have a purpose. You can spend your entire life making other people feel miserable, or you can choose to spend your life working to make others' better. You probably chose the first one, didn't you? I would hate to put words in your mouth, after all."

"You know what buddy" Miles said with a smirk, "if you want to believe that sort of pop physcology excuse for having meaning in your pitiful existence, then that's fine by me." This guy was completely wrong about him. Why would he bother wasting effort making everyone else miserable? He wasn't that vindictive. He just didn't care.
"So what... are you a self-help guru now?" He snapped at him, "Maybe all that time on the island got the idea into your head that you should write books or something?"

"Don't even bring up the island," Dennis growled. "If there wasn't meaning in life, there would be no reason to live it. You're here, Miles, so that means you have purpose. Why don't you go find it?" Dennis didn't even know he knew this stuff. He remembered saying once to a friend, long ago, that there was some stuff you would only know when you needed to. It was true once again here.
"This isn't helping," he muttered out loud to himself, meaning to keep it to his thoughts. He thought the police department would be a good break from just doing nothing, but he was wrong. Miles was just making him crave the island even more.

"If you mean go and see Callis and get away from you, sure I'll live it." Miles shrugged gulping down the rest of his coffee and throwing it in a trash bin. "And what isn't helping? That I'm not giving you any book ideas?" Miles gave him another smirk.

"No," Dennis said, and couldn't help but smile. "It's not...your business." Dennis didn't want to bring up the island again. It would just bring back painful memories and he's be sad again. And sad Dennis+ annoyed Dennis wasn't a good combination. "If you think you can do some good by talking to him, go ahead. If you're doing it to spite him, I'd advise not, but...I can't stop you."

((sorry for taking so long, my computer has been screwing up something bad of late.))
"Why?" Miles asked with a shrug. "He's pissed that he doesn't know what's happening with the Cortez case?" He guessed. Callis... he really should learn to trust more people like Miles. If he wants the job done right, anyhow. No point in being a skeptic when people like him get results. "I'm only here to help him, if he'd going to bite my head off the second I get in there, then there really isn't much point being here then, is there?" Miles could take his information elsewhere... back to Cortez herself if he didn't care about it.

{S'okay...gives me time to perfect some songs on Guitar Hero Aerosmith.}
"Nah, he's not mad," Dennis shrugged. "You were just saying that he didn't want you to have a part of the case, so there might be some stuff to settle out, and I didn't want it to turn bad. Go ahead, tell him whatever you need to." Dennis kind of liked talking to someone, even if it drove him mad, it was something to do. But if Miles had to go, Dennis probably would to. He was getting bored of just hanging around the place anyway.
"But, Miles," Dennis said, lowering his voice a bit. "You and I both want to get back there." Hopefully Miles would know what 'there' meant. "And apparently, we're not the only ones. I want to just forget about this entire little argument, because you and I both know that the only way we can get back there...the only way we can figure anything out, is if we all work together."

Miles blinked for a second as the man spoke about the island. Miles struggled to remember the guy's name. Dennis... was it? Two days and it seemed no one wanted to go back... and now...
"What do you know, man?" Miles asked suddenly. This guy seemed to know an awful lot and he was suspicious. What did he want? Everyone lied about what they really wanted, he had to be no exception. If their interests were the same they'd work together, but it be nice to know why one of them did want to go back all of a sudden.

Whatever Dennis expected to be Miles's response, that wasn't it. Even after a couple seconds of thinking where Miles was giving him the evil eye, Dennis had no idea what to say to that. "What the hell do you mean, 'what do I know'? Is this some ghostbuster thing?"
Dennis was just talking about the Cortez case, and the island. Miles was probably not talking about the case, because he should know Dennis had no business at all in that. But what does he know about getting back to the island? Only that he wanted to, and that he couldn't do it alone. That's why he wanted Miles's help.

"Noooo" Miles drew out, "it's not some sort of ghostbuster thing. It's some sort of 'you seem to know too much for your own good' thing. So what do you know?" He repeated. "Look, you weren't Widmore's crew, so who have you been talking to?" Most 815ers were ignorant and that's why they didn't want to go back to the island, but this guy was practically begging Miles to go, and that was enough to be suspicious about... So Miles sat back and waited for a half decent explanation, otherwise he'd really have some questions for him.

"Well," Dennis began awkwardly, still not gripping what Miles was saying. It just wasn't making sense to him. What did wanting to go back to the island have to do with knowing too much? "I don't know much, and I want to find out. But I do know people can't be in two places at once. We buried those cancellations." He had a feeling they had something to do with whatever Miles was trying to say. "Deep. On the beach. And I want to know what happens if we took one of them back. Because I don't think they'd just drop dead from returning there." He paused.
"I notice things that others tend to miss," Dennis continued. "I haven't been talking to anyone. You're the first person relatively from the island I've talked to since we got back, and I've had a lot of time to think to myself. Think about how much we all need the island, no matter what we think now."

Miles' smirk grew wider, it was almost sadistic what this man was suggesting, and he liked it. Take the so-called "dead" back. It was amusing he wasn't the only one who was wondering what would happen.
"The cancellations man," Miles told him, "there had to have been some way you've known about them. It's not like they've all been in the news... except for that junkie has been. So how did you know they're all walking around like the undead?" He still wasn't getting any answers, and if they were back on the island instead of in a police station he would have no qualms about getting violent to extract the truth from him.

"I'm not an idiot, Miles," Dennis rolled his eyes. Everyone knew in some way or another, or at least they should. Who cares how he knew? He knew, and that was that. Dennis didn't care how Miles knew. He wasn't even there for their funerals, he wasn't there when they died, it was more Dennis's business anyway. "I see them. And I figured it out. I haven't been sitting still since we got back, I've been all around Los Angeles already. You hear things when you're a cop that other people don't."
Dennis was getting the feeling that if there was someone to help, it wouldn't be Miles. He'd already said that he wanted to go back, so Dennis assumed that Miles could help. There was so much to figure out at that place, so many mysteries to be solved, and Dennis had no idea. It was eating him up inside. He just had to be so naturally curious.

((now you can start a thread with Charlotte while I'm gone))
"That's refreshing, man" Miles commented nonchalantly as the man defended himself, putting words into his mouth once again. Well, really it was more of an oxymoron, a cop that wasn't incompetent. He'd finished his coffee a few minutes ago so he really didn't see much point in hanging around here any longer. He supposed he would see Detective Callis and get it over with. He knew that cops heard things that other people didn't, which is why he always had his cop buddies around, and it didn't hurt to get one more from the L.A.P.D. Miles wandered up to the front desk, reached around and grabbed paper and a pen from behind the counter. He scribbled down a number and walked back to where Dennis was, giving him the paper. "Call Charlotte and we'll work something out about this. She destroyed my phone last night so from now on she's taking all my phone calls." He shrugged, "tell her you want to go back to the island with us... see how fast she denies wanting to go back."
