Dennis hung out in front of the LAPD. He wasn't working there, not now at least, when he had that big cash gift from Oceanic. Now, safe from the island, he could relax, see some of his friends from the crash. But Dennis knew that this was the only place he could relax, apart from the island.
He'd come to accept that he missed the island. Nothing was like waking up with fresh, salty air and the calming movements of waves. It just wasn't the same in Los Angeles...it's not the same anywhere.
Dennis was hoping that he'd run into someone from the island, someone to talk to. Maybe someone who wanted to go back. He knew that some of his friends were forced to leave, they didn't want to. He was one of the first in line to leave the place, but he wished he stayed. Now, it was too late.
Some of Dennis's old friends who were at the police department came up and greeted him. They all said the same thing. "Welcome back, so lonely without you, glad you're OK." And he would just smile and say thanks, knowing inside that he wasn't OK here.

Miles walked in to the LAPD looking for Callis. The guy really got on his nerves but he needed to know how the Avery case was going... and maybe rub it in his face a little that he already knew all about the case and didn't even have his pathetic little case files to do it.
He went to the front desk, tapping his fingers on it to annoy the woman behind it. "Yeah, Callis in?" He asked bluntly turning around and looking at the front area. His eyes locked with another man there who seemed familiar. Miles tried to place it. An 815er. "Man, are you people everywhere?" He said rudely to the man.

Dennis scowled in annoyance. This was his one place of peace, outside the island, and Miles Straume had to come in and ruin it. "Shut up, Straume. And I was going to tell you where Mr. Callis was, but, since you don't seem to be in a good mood, I don't think I will."
Dennis knew the place like the back of his hand. He could tell you where everything in the place was without thinking. "And Miles, don't bug Kevin. He's got stuff to do. More important stuff than you will ever accomplish."

"Ohhh..." Miles put his hand up and moved his fingers like they were 'spirit fingers', "Tough guy." He leant his elbows backwards on the front deck and kept a trained eye on the guy. "Yeah, I think 'Kevin' is going to want to stop his work to hear about the Cortez Junior case." He smirked. "But I can always take my information elsewhere... to the media perhaps?"

"Do what you want, Miles," Dennis said exasperatedly. "Just don't annoy anyone here, like I know you will." Miles wasn't exactly Dennis's favorite person from the island, he found Miles as an annoyance, and that was one thing that hadn't changed from the island, and one thing he didn't miss.
"You're so lucky I'm a kind guy," Dennis said sourly. "Or maybe I'm just telling you this because I don't want you in my sight. Down that hall," he pointed. "Take the first left, and it's the third door on the left. Knock first."

"What is wrong with you cops at the LAPD?" Miles commented lazily, not moving. "I mean my buddies at Inglewood at least have some balls to get involved in some of the gossip about Miss Cortez or at least make some crude remark, like 'the one with the giant ass?' or something. But you boys, you're soft. Sure you're a 'kind guy' but has Cortez senior castrated all her men in the force here or something? Does it come with the job?"

The only thing preventing Dennis from seriously hurting Miles was the fact he was surrounded by cops. "Alright, Straume, first of all, I am not a cop. I am currently living the luxury life off for a while now. Just hanging here." He looked around the place admirably. "And secondly, if you like Inglewood so much, then go back there. No one would miss you here. Also, police officers are supposed to be nice, they're supposed to be helpful, and not treat women like items. That is why you will never succeed in life."

"So she's gotten to you too?" Miles said with a snigger. "Let me get this straight... you've got all that money from the Oceanic Settlement and you want to just hang around here all day? Or is it that Cortez senior wants to keep you on a tight leash?" He rolled his eyes. Maybe Cortez Senior was keeping this himbo around as a boy toy. He'd expect that from that woman.

"Okay, no to everything," Dennis said, annoyed. "I haven't talked to Miss Cortez, not once, actually. No one can get to me Miles, that's what makes me and you differnet." Dennis really wished Miles would just go see Kevin already. Give Kevin this obnoxious guy to deal with, Dennis didn't really like the guy anyway.
"And yeah, all that money," Dennis began. "Will be going to a good cause, and will not be wasted. I'm just here to see my old friends again. And don't you have to go see Callis?" Dennis was trying to make it as clear as he could that he didn't want Straume around.

"Too bad, she's hot" Miles mentioned, but then figured he might have meant Cortez senior. "Well not mami unless you like that kind of thing." Miles raised an eyebrow. He was sure this guy did like that kind of thing. An older woman to throw him around.
Miles smirked and sidled over to the guy, he'd may as well spill the secret of the century. It was amusing to him on how all the 815ers were going to take it anyhow. "Something interesting about Cortez junior I happened upon in passing" he began slowly, sitting next to him. "You might know her as Ana-Lucia and it seems that she was on the island with you guys... you know... until she died."

"Oh, yeah," Dennis shrugged. "Ana-Lucia Cortez. I remember her. That was sad." He honestly didn't care much about either Cortez, junior or senior. "And you really need to get back to whatever it is you were doing involving Kevin. Or leave. Or at least stop being annoying." He looked at the ground. He would say anything blunt as long as it was the truth.
Suddenly a woman dressed in police uniform walked by. "Oh, hey, I'm back," he said to her. "You mind getting me a coffee from the lounge? I'd really appreciate it." The woman nodded and left. He turned back to Miles. "See what happens when you act nicely to women? You can have them getting you coffees."

"Yeah, I ought to try that" Miles said, clearly having no intention to. "So what are you an idiot or something? It was sad?" He tried to think of some other names that Leandra had told him the night before and that Frank confirmed on the phone... when he had a phone... until Charlotte destroyed it. Charlotte was actually a very good argument to why acting nicely never worked. "Charlie Pace? Boone... ummm... I don't know... something...?" He asked. "Cancellations right? Or were they?" Miles added wondering if the guy would get the big deal about it now.

"Yeah, cancellations, man, I get it," Dennis said, frustrated. "And it's Carlyle. Show some respect. To everyone." He couldn't help but wonder what happened to them after they 'died.' Were they just transported back to the current world, as if nothing had happened? Or was it Ben and his Others that did something? But most importantly...how? He shook the question off. Just another question for the list of weird island happenings.
"So, Miles," he said slowly, trying to get kinder so to see if Miles would too. "What brings you down to the police department? You seemed rather in a rush to see Kevin."

"I'm not sure about you but I'd be partly shocked at dead guys walking all over L.A. and thinking that they never even got on the plane... but if it doesn't seem to bother you." He shrugged.
"Anyway, I'm here about Cortez, as I said... her boyfriend died. I actually feel sorry for her. But Callis hasn't been too keen to have me on the case."

"I already realized the fact that they're dead, and now that part of their life never happened," Dennis said rather snappishly, but then regretted it. Miles just got on his nerves...and Dennis wasn't good when he was annoyed, it was hard to get him happy again. "But thanks anyway."
"So, what?" Dennis shrugged. "You're gonna...go in there, and fight with him about whether you can be on the case or not?" That didn't sound good. The last thing a police station needed was an arguement.
The woman came back and handed him his coffee with a smile. "Thanks," he said warmly. "And, hey if you aren't busy, would you mind getting my friend Miles here one too?" He turned to Miles. "You like coffee?"
