She turned back to Dan when he spoke about Desmond's flashes. Charlotte knew enough about them that it wasn't good to be having the flashes. She searched her mind for the information she had managed to understand when he had explained it to her.
"We need Desmond or something, don't we? Your constant?" She questioned, trying to remember.

"Constant?" Miles' brow furrowed. He sat on the ledge of the fountain a little further away from Charlotte and Dan and ran a hand through his hair, the water splashing up on his black T-shirt under his jacket. "I think you guys had better start from the beginning." He said at last.
All this talk of constants made him wish that he was paying a little more attention to what Daniel was trying to say in their meetings on the freighter for the "science team". Of course, it was near impossible to understand Dan's ramblings, but a little information on the subject might shed some light on why Dan doesn't want to go back to the island so badly.

Charlotte let out a sigh.
"From what I know, the constant is something that connects to this time period and the one you keep 'flashing' to, usually in the past. It happened to Desmond Hume. He kept blacking out after going through some sort of storm on his way to the Freighter. He was travelling to 1996. Dan told him over the sat. phone to go and find him at Oxford, which Desmond did. Dan explained to him that he needed to have someone or something that connected him to both time periods, and Penelope Widmore was his chosen constant." Charlotte explained.
"But Dan knows more about it than I do."

"Desmond Hume..." Miles ran the name through the database in his head. It came up empty. "Nope. Don't know him. He knows Penelope? How can we get in contact with him?" Miles was still on his previous thought, using Ben to get them back to the island. It wasn't a new thing that Dan was loosing his mind, so it wasn't a deterrent for Miles when thinking about going back to the island.
"So you cure this sickness by knowing someone?" Miles asked. He used the same words that the whisperers in the jungle used, the sickness. Miles didn't know how that was supposed to work, but there were a lot of things about the island he knew he just had to take for granted.

Desmond. He had been looking for Desmond, wanting to speak with him and talk to him about the flashes, about what had happened...but he couldn't find him.
"It's not a sickness." Daniel said. He wasn't sick. It wasn't something that you could cure and...and Daniel knew that if he just figured it out, figured it all out that it could be a tool. "It's--think of some time that you wish you could just--just go back in time and do over. Think of the best memory you've had or--or think of the future! It could be a tool--" and yet, here he was, freaking out because of what he had saw. Or not saw.
"It's--It's not that simple." Daniel said when Miles asked about knowing someone. "If somehow the person isn't there then you can't connect. You can't...hold on. And it doesn't---it doesn't make sense, Desmond went into the past and---whatever happened to m e, it was in the future. The future flash was only an hour when Eloise went, maybe two giving--time..." Daniel felt himself trail off as he moved, flipping through his journal. "There's a difference in the time distances. When it happens, it--it shifts. Small little things are different and--" and if he could just find out what was different, or what changed or hell, even what stayed completely the same, maybe he'd be one step closer to figuring it out.

"That's the problem Miles. We can't find him, or else Dan wouldn't be having flashes of his own." Charlotte said quietly, her hand at her temple again.
Daniel wasn't making any sense as he spoke, Charlotte not even understanding half of what he said. Something about his flashes being futeristic or something, and something about Eloise. She frowned slightly as she processed what he was saying in her mind.
"So, if we can't find Desmond, is there another constant we can use to stop these flashes?" She questioned Dan after a moment. "Something or someone else you know or knew or -whatever?"
She sat back down on the bench, waiting for Daniel to reply as she thought of her and Miles previous conversation. Maybe they never should have left. The flashes wouldn't be happening if they hadn't left. Maybe Miles had been right about going to find Widmore or Ben or somebody to help them return to the Island.

Miles felt the seriousness of the whole thing by the hurried way they both were talking. But talking about it wasn't going to help. He got up, went over and clamped Daniel on both shoulders with his hands, staring him right in the eye.
"So you were in the future? Where? What date?" Miles asked. If Dan was in the future, then Miles should remember this in the future. If Miles remembered this in the future, there's a good chance he would have nothing better to do than to track Dan down.
Maybe by that time in the future... Miles would have worked out a half decent reason why he should even bother saving the Genius' life.

Daniel jolted slightly at Miles' hands clamping down on his shoulders. He glanced at Miles' hands, and then watched his face as Miles spoke. His brows narrowed as he listened to him speak. "I told you." he said almost simply. "I was on a boat. In the middle of the ocean. It's not like I had a calender."
Daniel glanced at Miles' hands once again. "Can you let go of me, now?" he asked, and jerked himself away from Miles' grip. "I don't--I don't remember much of it. If I did, I could work out the details but...but I can't." If Daniel had to pick another constant, if he was able to, he knew for a fact it wouldn't be Miles. Someone that annoying should not have the ability to be your only connection to sanity and an intact brain. It just shouldn't be.

"Then you're screwed then" Miles said. He tried to help. Well... OK... he thought about trying to help. But Dan wanted to do things his own way. That's what Faraday was always like on the freighter. He always wanted to do his experiments his way and didn't listen to other suggestions. But Miles supposed he was the Physicist after all. A Physicist with a death wish.
Now Daniel was stuck out in the middle of the ocean and without a paddle, in every literal sense of the word and Miles had no excuse to even try to help him out.
"You figure out how to fix the Genius and change your mind about Ben, I'll be at the Stone Pony." Miles nodded towards Charlotte who he was addressing now. He didn't have to stick around for this. "If you want back on the island as bad as I think you do, you'll show up. Might even get that drink I owe you" he added mysteriously with a grin before bidding them both adieu and walking away from the fountain slowly, sticking his hands in his pockets and enjoying the sunshine.

Charlotte remained silent for a moment, listening as Dan and Miles muttered to each other for a moment. Her headache was becoming larger. Sighing, she stood back up just as Miles was leaving.
"Don't forget your picture Miles." She stated, nodding toward the ripped up bits in the fountain. Folding her arms across her chest, she let her head drop, her chin resting on her chest. "And you owe me two drinks Ghostman." She added, glancing back up for a moment. She looked at Daniel.
"Dan, I think - maybe - we could go back. You know, to the Island. Maybe your flashing would stop - and I'm thinking of going back myself."

Thankfully, Miles left, leaving a picture of Ben behind in the fountain. He blinked, hearing Charlotte say that Miles owed her two drinks. He moved, sitting down almost slowly as Charlotte spoke again. Her words now, made his eyes go wide. "Oh--oh, no. No, no, no, Charlotte," Daniel said, shaking his head as he moved to place a hand on her shoulder. "Listen to me, we cannot go back to the Island, okay? We can't go back, if--if we go back--" Daniel didn't want to think about what could happen, the nagging feeling in the pit of his stomach growing larger. His hand slipped from her shoulder up to her cheek as he shook his head again.
"We can't go back there."

Charlotte sighed, a frown tugging at the edge of her lips again. She honestly didn't need to go back, but it was a want. She wanted to find out more about the island, and how exactly the polar bear with the Dharma collar had ended up in the Tunisia desert. And she still wanted to find where she had been born.
"I know it sounds crazy, but...... I don't know." She stated. "It's just, the island had things I still want to find out about - study and stuff." She said, looking at him.
She let out a sigh.
"But you're probably right. We shouldn't go back. I'm tired and probably not thinking straight, so I'm not thinking of the consequences."

They couldn't go back. Daniel knew that if they went back, they might never come back. His hand dropped from her cheek to fall in his lap. He felt his head shake slightly. "You can't go back." he told her again, surely. "I have--I know whatever happened, whereever I went, I--" he couldn't even describe what he felt. He remembered feeling frightened, worried, all of that and even more; loss. "Just promise me you won't go back. You can't go back because if you go...I don't know if you'll come back. And I don't want that."

"I don't want to stay on that island forever either. I'd be stuck alone with polar bears and creepy smoke monsters forever." She said, smiling slightly as she brushed her hair from her face. "And I'd miss you too much." She added. After a moment, she nodded.
"All right." She said quietly. "I won't go. I swear." She promised. "I won't leave Los Angeles if you'd prefer."

It was comforting to Daniel to hear her say that she wouldn't go back to the Island. That she promised. She mentioned the polar bears and smoke monsters, and he felt himself nod. "That...wouldn't be good at all." And when she said she'd miss him too much, Daniel felt himself smile slightly. "I'd miss you, too. He felt himself nod again, a satisfied smile on his face. "Right. Good. That's--that's good, because, um...if you went back to the Island, I'd have to go, too. And as...facinating as that place can be some times, I'm--I'm really not looking to go back to it." There were too many unanswerable veriables, too many questions that if Daniel figured out one, it'd only lead to more. And he hated not being able to answer them, even if he worked on it all night, spending hours and hours up and hardly eating or sleeping.
"But that's good. Miles...Miles can go back if he wants. I won't miss him. But I would you. That's...that's one thing I remember. I remember looking out at the ocean and just...feeling alone. Lost. I didn't like it."
