As Charlotte's arms wrapped around his neck, Daniel felt his eyes close. A safety enveloped him, a warmth if Daniel held onto it, he knew it would keep him safe. Grounded. It would keep his head from exploding inside his skull like poor little Eloise.
He wrapped his arms around her, slowly and almost awkwardly however it felt so wonderful and safe. His fingers flicked through her hair, and he inhailed slightly, and instantly, he remembered. Something, at least.
Goodbye, Daniel...
"N-No." he muttered, shaking his head as he pressed his cheek against the softness of her hair. He felt his eyes clench shut slightly and he pressed his head against her shoulder. "It's not right. It's a...paradox." he muttered, his voice slightly muffled by her shirt.

She rested her head against his shoulder, smiling into his shirt. She knew for a fact now she wasn't going back to that island, even if Widmore held her at gunpoint and forced her onto a boat to show him the way. Though she doubted it would happen, the point was, she wasn't going to leave, especially without Daniel.
She recognized something was wrong and pulled back to look at Dan, but her arms remained around his neck. "Daniel? What's wrong? What are you talking about?" She questioned softly, blinking at him with pale blue eyes. She frowned, worried as he muttered something about a paradox.

"I-It's--" Dan felt Charlotte pull him away slightly, and his hands moved down, fingers curling around her waist as he looked at her. His brows narrowed deeply, and he shook his head quickly, looking back down. He couldn't think of it now. He couldn't think of it because if he did, he could lose himself again.
However, the more he tried not to think about it, the more it creeped into his head, spinning around in his brain and he felt his brows narrow deeper. He brought his hands up, pressing fingers lightly against her cheeks. "It doesn't make sense." he said the words frustrated, almost sadly because it was there. It was there, Daniel could see it and yet, he couldn't keep it. "It's...confusing." he said the word in almost a downward whisper, tilting his head slightly. "You're here...a-and then you're...there." He was confusing, so confusing and his fingers traced the lines on her face for a moment before he looked from her lips to her eyes. "I can't stop thinking about it and I'm...afraid that it'll happen again and I don't want that. I don't want to leave and I don't want you to leave."

Charlotte looked at him, trying to understand what he was saying. I know I'm here, but how can I be somewhere else? She asked herself, her eyes scanning his face for some sort of answer.
"Dan, I'm not leaving. I"m not going anywhere. And if you think it will make you leave, try not to think about it." She said slowly in an almost whisper, placing her hand on his cheek. "And where else am I besides here? Are you thinking about your flash-forward again?" She questioned softly, still attempting to comprehend how she could be in two places at once, unless Daniel was talking about here and somewhere in the future. He had been right when he had said it was confusing.

Daniel closed his eyes, trying to focus on the sound of her voice, not the smell of the Ocean or the sound of the waves crashing against the shore, all of which were assulting his senses. "You told me," he started slowly, the conversation slowly playing in his head as if it was on slo-mo. "You told me you needed to stay on the Island. You told me that I should go along ahead, I-I-I was in a boat. I was--taking people to the freighter and you said that you were going to stay. You told me...nothing is forever." He opened his eyes slowly, unsurely, as if when he opened them, he would no longer be in Serenity Park, but on the Island. "And then the bright light a-and you were gone."
He tilted his head lightly, leaning his cheek into her hand as he felt his eyes close again.

Charlotte blinked at him.
"We aren't on the Island anymore, and we can't go back, so that conversation can't be true." She whispered slowly, staring at the sidewalk as the gears in her mind whirred. If the conversation was true though, it made her wonder how they would get back on the island, and why she would still stay. And the bright light. What was that about? "And a bright light? Did it make me disappear or something?" She questioned. After a moment, she shook her head. "But nothing is forever." She said, repeating what he had said quietly. "Nothing can be forever."
She smiled at him, her thumb running along his cheek softly.

He didn't know what the white light was. All he knew was that it was bright, and then he had saw the young face of the room service kid, and it had been gone. He wanted it to be nothing; the by-product of too much equations and not enough sleep, but he had a feeling it wasn't. He felt himself look down, trying to stop his mind from whurling.
"Did I tell you...before I came onto the freighter, I had a caretaker?"
Would she think he was crazy? Sometimes he thought he was crazy, too. The experiments, they had taken a tole on him, but he wouldn't give up. No. He couldn't. But would he end up driving himself mad? Or was he already there?

Charlotte raised an eyebrow slightly at the sudden change of subject. She remained silent for a moment, not exactly sure how to reply. She gave a small shrug.
"No, I didn't know that." She replied honestly, still slightly confused as to why Dan had brought it up. Thought she wasn't surprised to hear about it; she couldn't imagine Dan living without somebody to help take care of him. She hesitated slightly before continuing. "What about it though?

"Oxford put me on administrative leave a month before they found Oceanic. They paid for a caretaker in my house because--because they thought I was crazy." He looked at her with almost a slight frown. He knew the machine worked, and he had seen what happened to Desmond; how else would he have known about the machine and it's certainties? There was a variable though, that Daniel couldn't grab. He couldn't make sense of it.
"I-I've just--I-I mean, I don't know if--" he narrowed his brows deepily. "Maybe I am crazy. I mean, we're--we're off the Island a-and we're not going back."

Charlotte frowned at him.
"You're not crazy Dan." She said in a serious tone. "You're a genius, and the idiots at Oxford obviously don't see that." She continued. "And I know we're not going back. Maybe what you saw or are seeing - maybe it's what could happen if we went back to the island." She suggested, chewing on her lower lip out of habit. "It doesn't nessicarily have to happen."
She didn't know if what she was saying could be true, but she had to try to help Dan believe that he was not crazy. He was far from crazy.

He felt a frown spread, his hands dropping to his lap as he listened to her speak. He wasn't sure if what she was saying was right. He remembered trying to tell his caretaker once, about his experiments and the headaches and memory loss that he had, and she had shook her head, smiled and laughed and said, 'oh, you're not crazy, Dan. You're just gifted.'
"N-No, it's--I've seen it work, it's--" he moved, grabbing his journal to flip open, thumbing through the pages quickly before he moved to point at one of the equations. "See? See, it's--" His brows narrowed slightly as he looked at the paper, and flipped to another page. He flipped back. "No, no." he muttered, bringing his hand up to chew on his thumb. "A-And we don't even know if we'd be able to get back to the Island. If...if we wanted to go back. It was hard enough getting there the first time."

Charlotte watched him frown deeper, then reach for his journal. She caught glimpses of equations and numbers as he flipped through the pages. They were a blur, btu she could pick out certain ones among them.
"It was hard getting there, and I doubt we'll probably be able to find it again for the second time." She agreed, nodding slightly. "At least, not without help." Charlotte added, looking up from the journal to look at him. "But calm down Dan, and try not to worry about it. We aren't going back."

She told him to calm down, and it was hard when his thoughts were racing as fast as they were. He brought a hand up, wanting to make his mind stop, make the flashes stop, however, the threat was there, always looming. He felt his eyes close for a moment, until he opened them. "I don't know how to--you've always listened to me when you--" he felt a slight laugh escape his lips, a nervous one, and he shook his head, looking down. "You've always listened."

Charlotte gave him a small smile. "Of course I have." She stated, smiling still. She was glad to see he had stopped freaking out for the moment, and it made her otherwise tense muscles relax slightly. She leaned against the bencha again, briefly glancing at the ripped up bits of paper that had fallen to the concrete at her feet. "And I always will as long as you have something to say."

Daniel felt a slight smile cross on his face as she said she'd always listen to him if he had something to say. "Thanks." he said, and then noticed a sigh escape her lips. He arched an eyebrow, and brought a hand up, sliding it around the back of her neck. He felt how tense her muscles around her neck were, and he frowned slightly. He wondered if she would really keep her promise on going back to the Island. "How long were you at Oxford for?" he asked, his fingers still working slightly at her neck muscles.
